Winter resupply plummets diesel over 24 cents across Labrador, while some regions see gas increase
Drivers in parts of Labrador will see a steep decrease in the price of diesel Thursday following the annual winter fuel resupply, thanks to an adjustment in pricing benchmarks since the last time fuel was delivered.
The Public Utilities Board lowered diesel prices by between 24 and 34 cents per litre across Labrador depending on location. The adjustment means prices for the fuel now range between $1.81 and $2.25 per litre. An exception is in Labrador West and Churchill Falls, where prices increased by 4.8 cents per litre.
However, gas prices saw a steep increase in some locations. Prices in central Labrador, the north coast and parts of southern Labrador where fuel is supplied by tanker increased by 9.2 cents per litre.
Other parts of Labrador saw different price adjustments. The area from the Straits to Red Bay saw no change in the price of gas, while southern Labrador from Lodge Bay to Cartwright and parts of the south coast where fuel is delivered by drum saw a decrease in price of 3.8 cents per litre.
The changes mean gas prices in Labrador now range between $1.71 and $2.16 per litre. The changes are the result of how pricing benchmarks have changed since the last time fuel was delivered, along with how it's acquired, stored and transported, according to the PUB.
Stove oil also dropped by between 20 and 26 cents per litre depending on location — except in Labrador West and Churchill Falls, which saw a 4.22 cent increase — which means customers in Labrador will now pay maximum prices between $1.27 and $1.69 per litre based on where they live.
Most fuels up slightly across Newfoundland
In Newfoundland, the maximum price for gasoline increased by 2.5 cents per litre following the last price adjustment before Christmas.
Drivers on the Avalon Peninsula will now pay a maximum of $1.653 per litre, while prices across the rest of the island range between $1.65 and $1.82 per litre.
Diesel increased by 4.9 cents per litre, meaning customers will pay maximum prices between $1.84 and $1.96 per litre.
The price of furnace oil increased by 4.2 cents per litre. Prices for the fuel now range between $1.18 and just over $1.36 per litre. The price of stove oil increased by 4.11 cents, putting maximum prices on the island between $1.16 and $1.34 per litre.
Propane was the lone fuel to decrease in price, down 1.1 cents per litre. Maximum prices now range between $1 and $1.13 per litre in Newfoundland and between 86 cents and $1.21 per litre in Labrador.
The upcoming Christmas season also means a change in when new gas prices will take effect. The PUB says the next update, which would have been on Boxing Day, will now happen on Dec. 28. After that, a price adjustment will occur on Jan. 3.
