Man wounded in leg as Ottawa police investigate 2 shootings in 24 hours
Montreal Road shooting likely gang-related, say police
A man was shot in the leg Saturday night in the second of two instances of gunplay in Ottawa within 24 hours.
Officers were called to Montreal Road and Bradley Avenue in the city's Vanier neighbourhood at around 10:30 p.m., where they found a male victim who'd been shot in the lower leg.
The shooting victim was attempting to run away from an unidentified black man in his early 20s wearing a suit, said police, when the shooter fired multiple rounds from a semi-automatic handgun.
The victim was hit at least once, said police. He is known to the force's guns and gangs unit and is refusing to cooperate with the investigation, police said.
The shooting is believed to be gang-related, police added.
No injuries in earlier shooting
The Vanier shooting was the city's ninth in the past two weeks and the second in Ottawa in less than 24 hours.
At around 6 a.m. Saturday, police were called to Shillington Avenue and Merivale Road after receiving reports that shots had been fired.
Patrons at a nearby restaurant refused to give any information about the shooting, but officers with the guns and gangs unit later determined that two shots had been fired, including one they believe went into a vehicle that had stopped on Shillington, police said.
The vehicle immediately sped away after the gun went off, and police say it's not known if anyone was injured.
Saturday's shootings were the 39th and 40th so far in 2015.
Anyone with information about either shooting can contact the guns and gangs unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5050. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
