Whitehorse man admits to killing Christopher Brisson, suggests lesser plea
Darryl Sheepway, facing murder charge, says he was intoxicated when he killed Brisson in 2015
A Whitehorse man, charged with first degree murder in the 2015 death of Christopher Brisson, has admitted he killed Brisson.
But Darryl Sheepway, 38, has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. He claims to have been intoxicated by drugs at the time, and argues he should therefore face the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Sheepway appeared in Yukon Supreme Court by video on Tuesday, from his Whitehorse jail cell.
His lawyer told the court there's little dispute over the facts in the case.
Brisson's body was found in September 2015 in the Miles Canyon area of Whitehorse. He had been reported missing three days earlier by his family.
Sheepway was arrested almost a year later, in August 2016, and charged with first degree murder.
Federal Crown prosecutors told the court Tuesday they will not accept the lesser plea of manslaughter.
A judge and jury trial is now being arranged for sometime next year.
Sheepway is also facing 10 additional charges of armed robbery stemming from an alleged crime spree in Ontario in late 2015. He's accused of robbing a number gas bars and convenience stores in the Brantford and Woodstock regions.
Sheepway is scheduled to appear in Whitehorse court again on Wednesday to answer to those charges.
