Winnipeg police say they are investigating the death of an unidentified man who was assaulted on Friday as a homicide.

Winnipeg police are investigating the death of an unidentified man who died after being assaulted early Friday.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was providing emergency medical care to a man on Dugas Street between De Bourmont and Bleau Avenues around 4:30 a.m. 

The victim was suffering from serious injuries consistent with being assaulted and was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died, a news release said on Saturday. 

Police are working to confirm the identity of the victim.
