One person is dead and another was taken to hospital in unstable condition following a house fire in northwest Winnipeg, the city says.

Firefighters called to a two-and-a-half-storey duplex in the 1400 block of Selkirk Avenue, east of Keewatin, just before 11 p.m. Monday found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.

Some of the occupants had already evacuated the home, but told firefighters one person might still be inside, a Tuesday news release from the city said.

Firefighters who entered the house to fight the blaze from inside found one person in the home. That person was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital in critical condition, where they were later pronounced dead.

One other resident was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

The city says a cat also died in the fire.

The fire was declared under control just after midnight and is under investigation.
