Police and paramedics were sent to the Father Michael Troy Catholic School on Thursday, after a Grade 7 student made "a bad decision" by bringing in a BB gun to class.

The airgun ultimately went off hitting a female student in the leg. The projectile did not lodge into the girl's leg nor break her skin.

"The student is a good student and just made a bad decision to bring this to school," said Lori Nagy, the Catholic School Board spokeswoman.

"We know that it wasn't meant to harm anyone but at the same time, of course, it did inadvertently hurt another student."

The BB gun was in the shape of a handgun.

Nagy said she didn't see the BB gun but added that "anything that can be seen as a weapon, that someone can think is a weapon should not be in a school."

Police say fake guns that look like hand guns can pose a real threat. The gun on the left is the pellet gun. The one on the right is the real gun. (CBC)

EPS believe there was no premeditation on the behalf of the student who brought the airgun.

"There was no evidence of threats or statements being uttered prior to the BB gun going that would suggest that there was any intentionality," said an EPS spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu.

"It appeared that the safety feature was off and the BB gun accidently discharged firing a round that struck another student in the lower body."

Nagy said that the student who brought the weapon has been suspended for five days.

No charges have been filed at this point and the school is now handling the incident.

Police have seized the BB gun.
