As two of Marvel's high-profile Avengers get set for an epic cinematic battle, a similar fight is brewing between DC's biggest superheroes, with the latest Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer promising "the greatest gladiator match in the history of the world."

Unveiled during Wednesday night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live (where the latest Captain America: Civil War  trailer also debuted), the fresh footage offered hungry fans a look at the titular heroes clashing both in battle and as their civilian alter egos Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). Throughout, a jumpy, long-haired Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) delights in the antagonism between them.

The trailer offers glimpses of co-stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and, finally, Gal Gadot (as Wonder Woman). It also introduces a powerful villain that unites the sparring superheroes: Doomsday — the unrelenting beast who, in the DC universe, is known for killing Superman.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder, hits cinemas in March.
