Flood watch for Windsor region continues with more rain coming

Parts of Windsor and Essex County experienced minor flooding as rain continued to fall on the region over several days. 

A flood watch remained in place Friday, even though flooding had subsided in the Leamington area between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee National Park.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority issued a more serious flood warning for parts of Leamington Thursday evening, but that has been rescinded.

The flood watch remained in place as rain could continue into Saturday, according to ERCA. The already oversaturated ground has created conditions for localized flooding through all of southwestern Ontario.

"The potential for flooding exists throughout the entire region especially in low-lying areas adjacent to and within floodplain areas of all major waterways and shoreline areas," ERCA explained in its update. 

In addition to previous concerns about flooding near Lake Erie, areas along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may see higher water levels due to strong north winds pushing waves near Lakeshore, Tecumseh and east Windsor.

Environment Canada issued a rain warning Thursday morning, predicting 40-70 mm of rain will fall in the area by Saturday.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has warned residents in the area to clear their drains and prepare for flooding in low-lying areas.

Environment Canada also warns residents to watch out for washouts along rivers, creeks and culverts.
