Boy, 6, struck and killed by school bus in Kleinburg
Bus driver was in the area picking up children for school, police say
A six-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus driver in the York Region suburb of Kleinburg Wednesday morning, police say.
York police said the child was hit just before 8 a.m. in the area of Pierre Berton Boulevard and Kleinburg Summit Way.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Const. James Dickson.
Dickson said investigators are trying to piece together the circumstances of the fatal collision.
"We don't have a lot of information right now. Our officers are working diligently to ensure we are addressing everything here," he told reporters.
The driver remained at the scene and is co-operating with police, Dickson said.
The bus was in the area picking up students for school, he added. He wasn't able to say whether any children were on the bus at the time of the collision.
Support services will be made available to any children, parents, families, teachers and first responders impacted by the boy's death, Dickson said.
In a statement on Wednesday, the York Catholic District School Board said the boy's family has asked for privacy.
"Supports have been available at the school today to help those who need it, and will continue to be available in the days ahead," the board said.
The York Region District School Board, for its part, expressed condolences to the boy's family. The board noted in a statement on Wednesday that the collision did not directly involve any of its students.
"We send our thoughts and deepest condolences to those affected by the tragic news in the community. School board mental health clinicians have been made available to area public schools in the area where students may have needed support," the board said.
Anyone with relevant dashboard camera or home security video or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact York police or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
