One of the city's busiest roadways in Thunder Bay will be getting a new pedestrian bridge this summer.

Golf Links Road is being twinned — and part of that involves the construction of foot bridges over the McIntyre River.

City engineer Rick Harms said the project is one of many Thunder Bay has taken on to increase pedestrian and cycling safety.

"We're trying to accomplish additional recreation trails [and] off-road trails," he said.
"There are bicycle routes [and] there's new sidewalk construction — all of which is part of the city's ongoing policy to enhance active transportation in the community."

Harms said the pedestrian bridge is a "milestone project," when it comes to pedestrian safety in the city.

"There should be no vehicle-pedestrian conflicts of any type on this structure," he said.

"It's part of a healthy cities concept. Schools and health units are involved to promote active lifestyles."

The bridge has been put in place and the city will continue construction in the surrounding area and roads until October.
