Cape Breton Regional Police have laid a second-degree murder charge after a body was found inside an apartment in Sydney on Tuesday.

In a news release Thursday morning, police said Leonard Anthony Tenass, 34, originally from New Brunswick but now living in Sydney, was arrested Tuesday and remains in custody at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre.

Officers were first called to an apartment building on MacAulay's Lane on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. local time.

"Originally, police received a call to 911 for an individual who was causing a disturbance outside one of the residences, banging on some doors, that type of thing," said police spokesperson Desiree Magnus.

"As a result of being at that residence on MacAulay's Lane, they did discover a deceased person inside."

Magnus said the person is believed to be a "victim of an assault."

The provincial medical examiner's office is working to identify an exact cause of death. Police did not release the name of the victim or any other details.

Magnus said the pair were known to one another and police are treating the matter as an isolated incident.
