#TBT: Little Miss Ugly, not your average pageant
From 1986: Men from a United Church group in Mount Pearl held a Miss Ugly Contest after the Little Miss Mount Pearl Beauty Pageant was cancelled.
Our weekly Throwback Thursday feature is from 1986. The Little Miss Mount Pearl Beauty pageant was a popular event at the annual winter carnival until it came up against some opposition.
The 10-year-old pageant was cancelled due to criticism from the Early Childhood Development Association and the Status of Women's Council.
Amid the reaction, a replacement —the Little Miss Ugly Pearly Mount Contest — was born.
Created by the Mount Pearl United Church Men and Women's Club as part of a fundraising effort, it was the men who took centre stage for their chance to win the crown.
CBC reporter Chris Richardson took in the show to check out the talent and hear from the winner.
