Luke Major says his current band, formed "kind of by happenstance."

Major was a key player on the St. John's music scene about a decade ago with his band, Mercy the Sexton.

About four years ago, Major took part in a French study program in Montreal. While studying, he met other like-minded musicians.

Major then relocated to Montreal permanently and formed the band Natation with three French-speaking Quebec musicians.

As a result, Major said Natation's fan base tends to be mostly francophones, with a scattering of expatriate Newfoundlanders.

"I find there's a real kind of synergy between Quebecers and Newfoundlanders," said Major.

"They both like to have fun, like to party, they both like to laugh,"
