First Listen: We Win Some We Lose by The Once
'We finally know what The Once sounds like,' says band member Phil Churchill
Geraldine Hollett of The Once says a recent world tour has brought the Newfoundland acoustic folk band to a new level of artistry.
The Once, which consists of Hollett, Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale, spent most of 2014 touring and recording with international music star Passenger, also known as Mike Rosenberg.
"He [Passenger] has so much information and so many experiences of his own, and you get to watch him for seven months," Hollett said.
"You get to learn what it's like at the next level, and how to push yourself."
New sounds added in the studio
Dale said that when The Once went back into the studio to record We Win Some We Lose, the band brought those new experiences and a willingness to spread their wings musically.
"Our interests go well beyond just that handful of acoustic instruments," he said.
Dale added that Daniel Ledwell, the producer of this recording, encouraged the bandmates to add drums and other instruments to their sound.
"It was a chance to play with all sort of bells and whistles, keyboards and electric sounds," Dale said.
