A house in Corner Brook which was home to more than 200 cats was severely damaged in a fire on Aug. 22

The Corner Brook house where 200 cats once lived caught fire and burned last night.

The Corner Brook Fire Department responded to the fire on McWhirthers Lane late on Wednesday night, following reports by neighbours that they saw flames coming from the house.

The home was extensively damaged by fire and smoke.

Sgt. Brad Saint of the RNC said investigators still don't know what caused the fire.

"At this stage it's undertermined. Like I say, there hasn't been a resident there for some weeks now and there was electricity, power, to the home."

On May 24, Corner Brook city officials, animal control officers, the SPCA, a local cat rescue group and the fire department were called to the house, following a complaint about it being overrun with animals.

About 30 cats had to be euthanized. The remaining cats were screened and put up for adoption.

Police and fire officials were still on the scene of the fire on Thursday morning.
