Corner Brook putting down dozens of cats
About 180 more housed in former fire station
Officials in Corner Brook have their hands full dealing more than 200 cats they rescued from a home in the city's Humbermouth area since last Thursday.
About 30 of the animals taken from the house have been put down.
Roughly 180 remaining cats have been moved from a building owned by the port authority to the former fire station in Curling.
Corner Brook’s city manager said the situation has been a challenge for city staff.
"Under the conditions that they did it, with a large number of spectators watching and media and so on and so forth and how they handled the animals in that situation, in my opinion, was extraordinary," said Paul Barnable.
Barnable said the city is now trying to figure out what can be done with the home that housed all the felines.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and other officials removed dozens of cats from the Corner Brook house last Thursday night after receiving complaints that well over a hundred animals had been crowded into the small bungalow.
The move came a night after police and others — animal control officers, the SPCA, a local cat rescue group and the city's fire department — were called to the home, following a complaint about the scene.
The city received the owner's permission Thursday to enter the home, and began removing animals to be inspected by a vet.
