Winnipeg officer pleads guilty to dangerous driving causing death

A Winnipeg police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to dangerous driving causing death for an accident in 2005 that killed a 40-year-old mother of three.

Const. DerekHarveymordenzenk, who is also known as Derek Harvey-Zenk,will be sentenced in August.

He was arrested after his pickup truckstruck Crystal Ann Taman's small Chevrolet convertible at the intersection of Highway 59 and the Perimeter Highway in Winnipeg on Feb. 25, 2005. Taman, who police saidwas stopped at a traffic light, died in the crash.

In a deal reached with special prosecutor Marty Minuk, Harveymordenzenk pleaded guilty to a single charge of dangerous driving causing death while charges of refusing a breathalyzer, impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death were dropped.

The Winnipeg officer, who was 31 at the time of the incident,had been placed on administrative leave following the incident.

A spokesperson for the Winnipeg Police Service said Tuesday that administrators had received the information about the conviction and had begun a review of his status.
