Three separate police agencies are part of an investigation into a Winnipeg police officer charged in a fatal traffic accident.

Derek Harvey-Zenk, 31, was charged with impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and refusing a breathalyzer after a woman was killed in a collision north of Winnipeg on Feb. 25.

The funeral for Crystal Ann Taman, a 40-year-old mother of three, was held Wednesday.

The East St. Paul police will investigate the accident in collaboration with the RCMP traffic division and the Winnipeg Police Service's professional standards unit.

Chief Harry Bakema of the East St. Paul police says his investigators will not be swayed by the fact that the accused is also a police officer.

"We have a job to do. It's like going to an accident scene and seeing a badly injured body. It may bother you, but you have to deal with it and do it properly," he says.

Winnipeg Police Chief Jack Ewatski has placed Zenk on administrative leave until the charges are reviewed.
