A Winnipeg police officer has been charged with impaired driving after a fatal collision last Friday.

Derek Harvey-Zenk, 31, was driving a pickup truck around 7 a.m. Friday on Highway 59 in the Rural Municipality of East. St. Paul, just north of Winnipeg. His truck collided with a small Chevrolet convertible, which police say was stopped at a traffic light at the north Perimeter Highway.

The collision killed the driver of the convertible, a 40-year-old mother of three named Crystal Ann Taman. Police say Zenk did not require medical attention.

In addition to impaired driving causing death, Zenk has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and refusing a breathalyzer.

Winnipeg Police Chief Jack Ewatski has placed Zenk on administrative leave until the charges are reviewed.
