Province issues heat advisory amid soaring temps in Manitoba
Chief provincial public health officer warns of effects of heat, reminds people to check on others
The province's chief provincial public health officer issued a heat advisory for Manitoba on Tuesday.
Tuesday's forecast for Winnipeg called for a high of 30 C, which was expected to climb to 32 C by Wednesday.
Southwest Manitoba was expected to reach temperatures closer to 34 C by midweek.
Provincial officials said southern Manitoba would be hit the hardest, but central Manitoba was also at risk with hot and humid conditions forecast for that area.
Officials reminded people to drink lots of fluids, wear loose clothing and sunscreen, find cool places to take breaks, take cold baths or showers and to make sure pets and kids were never left alone in closed vehicles or direct sunlight.
Signs of a heat-related illness include dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, headache and fast breathing.
Officials said neighbours, friends and older family members should be checked on – especially if they live alone or are ill.
The City of Winnipeg also reminded people they can cool down at any of the city's public leisure centres, libraries, pools or spray pads.
