A heat wave is coming to southern Manitoba, so provincial health officials are issuing a heat advisory to encourage people to avoid heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

High temperatures and humidity levels are expected for Thursday and this weekend across much of the south.

Environment Canada is forecasting sunny skies and a daytime high of 30 C in Winnipeg on Thursday, 27 C with rain on Friday, and more sunshine and temperatures of 30 C on both Saturday and Sunday.

Parts of northern Manitoba may also see warmer than normal temperatures and high humidity over the next few days, according to the province.

In issuing the heat advisory, the chief provincial public health officer is reminding Manitobans to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.

Older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses, people who live alone and those who work or exercise outdoors are at greatest risk.

The province says people can reduce their risk of heat-related illnesses by drinking plenty of water (and limiting alcohol consumption), wearing loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing, planning outdoor activities at cooler times of the day and taking a break from the heat when needed.

As well, children and pets should never be left alone in closed vehicles or in direct sunlight, the province said.
