Alberta Health Services has confirmed that the seven-year-old boy who was pulled from the pool on Tuesday at the city-owned O'Leary Leisure Centre has died.

A lifeguard at the north Edmonton facility found the boy lying face-down in the water around 2:30 p.m.

Lifeguards and paramedics performed CPR on the child. He was not breathing when he was rushed to hospital.

The city is launching a full review of the incident, which is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks.

"Given the seriousness of this incident, we do plan to ask [an] outside expert to participate," said Rob Smyth, branch manager of community and recreational facilities. "Having a third party come in, external eyes, for us, is very important."

Smyth said there were 82 people in the pool and two lifeguards on duty, which meets city standards.
