Calgary Remembrance Day 2014 ceremonies

This year’s Remembrance Day marks the 100th anniversary since the start of First World War, which ran from 1914 to 1918. Here is a list of the ceremonies happening around Calgary to mark the event.

Here is a list of the Remembrance Day ceremonies happening around Calgary on Tuesday.

Field of Crosses 

In the stretch of park along Memorial Drive there are 3,000 crosses erected every year to commemorate the southern Alberta soldiers who died in action. The crosses are inscribed with the name, age, rank, regiment and date of death of each soldier killed in action. The flag-raising ceremony is held at sunrise with the service starting at 10:45 a.m. on the north side of Memorial Drive between Third Street N.W. and Centre Street.

Battalion Park

The park was originally known as camp Sarcee and was the training location for many soldiers awaiting overseas deployment in the First World War. Ceremonies will be conducted by a contingent of the King’s Own Calgary Regiment. Ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the hill, which is located at 3001 Signal Hill Dr. S.W.

Kerby Centre

The Kerby Centre is a non-profit organization for seniors. They are hosting a Remembrance Day service in the centre’s gym that is open to the public. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., and service starts at 10:50 a.m. The centre is located at 1133 Seventh Ave. S.W..

Military Museum 

The service being held outside of the museum features the King’s Own Calgary Regiment 'A' Squadron on parade. Admission to the museum is free for the day, but the museum will be accepting non-perishable food donations to the veterans food bank. Service begins at 10:45 a.m. at 4520 Crowchild Tr. S.W.

Central Memorial Park

The annual Remembrance Day Ceremony is being held at the cenotaph of Calgary’s oldest park. The ceremony is attended by the Calgary Highlanders Infantry Regiment and begins at 10 a.m. at 1221 Second St. S.W.

Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

This is one of the few indoor Remembrance Day ceremonies. The event is free and open to all. Doors open at  9:30 a.m. with the ceremonies commencing at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are first-come, first-serve. Parking is free for those attending the event, which is located at 1415 14 Ave. N.W.

Aero Space Museum of Calgary

A ceremony will take place outdoors and will feature Honourary Col. John Melbourne as one of the speakers. This event will be accepting donations for the Veterans Food Bank. The ceremony begins at 10:15 a.m. at 4629 McCall Way N.E. 

Calgary International Airport

The International Airport will host a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. for airport staff, travellers and anyone wishing to attend. Event will feature the airport pipe band and airport community honour guard on the departures level or the main terminal at 10:30 a.m.

Hillhurst United Church

Is holding a ceremony at 10:45 a.m. The church is located at 1227 Kensington Close N.W.

Genesis Place

A ceremony will be held at the Shane Field House in Airdrie, and is expected to be attended by a contingent of the Calgary branch of the service battalion. Doors open at 8:30 a.m., ceremony from  from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. 800 East Lake Blvd N.E., Airdrie.

Royal Canadian Legions

Various branches of the Royal Canadian Legions in and around Calgary will be hosting Remembrance Day services, including in Cochrane just west of the city.
