A wreath in honour of journalist Michelle Lang was laid Tuesday morning at the Calgary Field of Crosses on Memorial Drive.

The former Calgary Herald reporter was killed while on assignment in Afghanistan in 2009.

Four soldiers also died in the bombing, which took place in Kandahar — the main Canadian base in the Afghan conflict.

The ceremony included a performance by a school choir and guests like Alberta's Lieutenant Governor Donald Ethel.

Former Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang died in a 2009 bombing in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Lorne Motley, editor in chief of the Calgary Herald and Michelle Lang's former boss, says the ceremony brought back some painful memories.

"When you go through it and hear the Last Post, hear the children singing, you can't help but have it touch you," he said. "It certainly brings a lot of emotions back to me, and yes, some tears will be shed, no doubt about it."

Ceremonies are being held at the Field of Crosses site at both sunrise and sunset in the week leading up to Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
