Victoria man charged in 'brutal sexual assault' in Denver, 3 others suspected
Colby Messer, 30, was arrested in Las Vegas earlier this month on 6 counts of sexual assault
A B.C. man is awaiting his next court date in Denver, Colorado, accused of six counts of sexual assault in what is described as a "brutal sexual assault of a 27-year-old woman" in a Denver hotel room. Three other Vancouver Island men are considered suspects in the case.
A release from the Denver District Attorney's office says 30-year-old Victoria resident Colby James Messer has been in custody since his arrest in Las Vegas on March 4.
Officials had been tracking Messer and three other B.C. men since November of last year when the group visited Denver to attend a Denver Broncos game.
Court documents say the victim was drinking with Messer and the other men before being sexually assaulted multiple times in a hotel room.
The victim said she doesn't recall how she ended up in the hotel room, but stated when she woke up the next morning she immediately went to the hospital, according to an affidavit from a Denver police detective.
The assault was reported after the men had returned to Canada.
The Denver DA and U.S. Justice Department are pursuing a case against the other three suspects.
