Peel police say homicide investigators are now looking into a single-vehicle crash that happened in Mississauga early Monday.

In an update late Monday morning, Const. Richard Chin told reporters the 24-year-old man had been shot prior to the collision, which took place around 1:45 a.m. on Dixie Road, just south of Derry Road.

Police have since identified the man as Gurvinder Singh of Caledon, Ont.

Police believe the shooting took place during an altercation at a nearby industrial complex in the area of Midway Boulevard and Invader Crescent, Chin said.

"He attempted to flee the area and consequently ended up crashing," he said.

The man had "significant injuries" when police found him, Chin said. He was rushed to a trauma centre where he later died.

Chin said it was too early in the investigation to provide more details about the shooting that preceded the crash.

Police previously said the man died in hospital after sustaining critical injuries in the collision. Whether the man died from injuries sustained during the shooting or the collision has yet to be determined by the coroner, he said.

Investigators are asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the area at the time to come forward.

Dixie was closed southbound from Derry to Mid-Way Boulevard.
