O Tannen-balmy: There's some warm and weird weather on tap for parts of N.L.
Biggest changes will be felt in Labrador
Parts of Newfoundland and Labrador are in for a warmer than typical day on Thursday, with weather that might feel more like a warm spring day than the middle of December.
Parts of the island should have highs between 10 and 13 degrees, but the biggest swings will be felt in Labrador.
The high for Thursday in Labrador City is expected to be 23 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, for example.
That will not only smash the previous record of 2.2 C set in 1969, but also leave a slushy mess, CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler said Wednesday afternoon.
"That mess is going to turn into ice because the temperatures will plummet starting in the afternoon for Lab West and then the rest of Labrador through the evening and overnight dropping 18 to 20 degrees in that time frame," she said.
By comparison, the temperatures across the island will be seven to 15 degrees warmer than normal, with rain and winds gusting between 60 and 80 km/h and upwards of 90 to 100 km/h for the west coast.
The warm spell will not last that long on the island, either. Brauweiler said temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night to near or just below zero, with snow squalls developing on the west coast on Friday.
