Man, woman dead in separate New Year's Eve vehicle crashes: Manitoba RCMP
43-year-old man, who wasn't wearing seatbelt, still in hospital after Tuesday rollover
An 18-year-old woman from northern Manitoba and a 32-year-old man from Winnipeg both died in separate vehicle collisions on New Year's Eve, RCMP say.
Thompson Rural RCMP got a report of a potential single vehicle collision on Highway 280, about 30 minutes south of Split Lake, around 7 a.m. Tuesday, police said Thursday in a news release.
Split Lake, also known as Tataskweyak Cree Nation, is a community northeast of Thompson and about 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
Two people were receiving treatment from fire crews and First Nation safety officers outside of an SUV when Mounties arrived.
Police said Thursday that the driver, a 43-year-old man from Split Lake, was heading south when the SUV plunged into the ditch and rolled.
The passenger, an 18-year-old woman also from Split Lake, was pronounced dead at the site of the rollover.
The man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital.
Both the man and the woman were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the rollover, police say.
Fatal crash near Deacons Corner
A man died in another crash just under 12 hours later near Deacons Corner, just southeast of Winnipeg, RCMP said.
Oakbank RCMP said there was a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 1 and Settlers Road in the rural municipality of Springfield, police said.
A 32-year-old man from Winnipeg was driving north on Settlers Road before his vehicle entered the westbound lane of Highway 1 and it was struck by an SUV. He was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.
The young woman driving the SUV, an 18-year-old from La Broquerie, suffered minor injuries.
RCMP continue to investigate both crashes.
