Human remains found after garage fire in Lake Winnipeg community

Human remains were found in a garage after emergency crews extinguished a fire in a small Manitoba community on the weekend, RCMP say.

Emergency crews called around 8 p.m. Sunday to residence on Matheson Island

Human remains were found in a garage after emergency crews extinguished a fire in a small Manitoba community on the weekend, RCMP say.

Crews were called around 8 p.m. Sunday to residence on Lakeview Road in the community of Matheson Island, located at the narrows of Lake Winnipeg, a little over 200 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Both the cause of death and the fire remain under investigation, but no criminality is suspected, RCMP said in a news release on Tuesday.

No additional information has been provided about the age or sex of the person.

RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner continue to investigate.
