Jeff Browaty, who represents North Kildonan on city council, had hoped to take a run at federal politics. (CBC)
On the weekend, Bell beat out City of Winnipeg Coun. Jeff Browaty for the federal Conservative nomination in the Kildonan-St. Paul riding.

No official announcement has been made by the party but on Sunday night Browaty sent congratulations to Bell via Twitter

The federal election is set for October.

Conservative MP Joy Smith, who has represented Kildonan-St. Paul since 2004, said earlier this year that she would not seek re-election.

Bell, who was with the Bombers from 2002 until 2014, was let go in August last year as part of what the team called "corporate restructuring."
