Four people died Sunday in a head-on highway collision in northwestern Alberta, RCMP said Monday.
At the time of the crash, police were on the lookout for a vehicle that had been the subject of complaints about impaired driving.
In a news release Monday, Peace Regional RCMP said that around 4 p.m. Sunday, Red Earth Creek RCMP received reports of impaired driving on Highway 986.
Police were told the vehicle was leaving the Red Earth Creek area and heading in the direction of Little Buffalo, about 60 kilometres west.
RCMP were "actively looking for the vehicle" when they got a report about a collision in the area of Highway 986 and Range Road 130A, near Marten Lake, police said in the news release.
Two occupants of the vehicle matching the community complaints from Red Earth Creek died on scene. Their identities are under investigation, police said.
Two women from the second vehicle, ages 33 and 49, were declared dead on scene by EMS and STARS air ambulance personnel. Both were residents of Red Earth Creek, police said.
A collision reconstruction analyst was on scene investigating for several hours, RCMP said.
Red Earth Creek is about 420 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
