Highway 17 was closed for more than 10 hours following incident
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has confirmed three people were killed in a significant early-morning collision near Ignace last week.
Officers with the OPP, along with fire and emergency medical services, responded to the incident, which involved two commercial motor vehicles, west of Ignace shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Dryden OPP said in a news release.
"Three individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene," said OPP regional media and communications co-ordinator, Sgt. Hayley Mcleary, in an email on Monday.
"While the investigation remains ongoing, no charges are being considered at this time," Mcleary said.
Highway 17 was closed for more than 10 hours following the incident. Traffic was re-routed down Highway 622 to Highway 11.
"Motorists are urged to avoid the area and plan alternative routes. The highway will remain closed until further notice, with updates provided as they become available," the Dryden OPP said on Thursday. "Police appreciate the public's patience and co-operation during this time."
A photo posted to the Skilled Truckers Canada Facebook page appears to show a collision involving two transport trucks, with a police cruiser at the scene.
