Past Juno stars cover fellow winners in London — the future home of the Junos.
As part of CBC Music's Junos 365 London sessions — where Juno winners and nominees cover a past Juno winner — Whitehorse chose to cover Feist's "How Come You Never Go There," from her Juno-winning album Metals.
Whitehorse was immediately drawn to this song from Feist's recording, which won adult alternative album of the year in 2012. Members Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland say that Feist's sound was so influential in the Canadian music scene, and they wanted to put their own unique spin on the song. Whitehorse performed this cover at Sugar Shack Recording Studio in London, Ont. — the 2019 Junos host city.
Below, Doucet and McClelland share why they chose to cover this iconic Feist tune.
Why did you choose to cover Feist?
Luke Doucet: She's such a big presence in our minds, and when I say our minds I mean ours [as in Whitehorse's] in particular, but I mean also Canadian artists of a certain vintage who occupy a certain place. She's a big one.
Melissa McClelland: She's the epitome of cool and she finds the vibe of a song, she finds exactly what her song needs to be. So we wanted to be careful and find a way to do it differently, do it in our own way, but still try to keep it at that level of quality.
What was your approach in covering this song?
Doucet: When we were talking about what kind of flavours we would [add], or how we would treat the production in a different way from the production on her record, we were talking about a lot of Canadiana (or Americana for lack of a better term) and what would it sound like if the Band played it, for example.
McClelland: I was imagining the Beatles rooftop session kind of vibe, or even a Carole King type of thing. I could see the song going in that direction. It's a very different approach than what Leslie would take, but also a cool retro thing.
