Past Juno stars cover fellow winners in London, Ont. — the future home of the Junos.
As part of CBC Music's Junos 365 London sessions — where Juno winners and nominees cover a past Juno winner — R&B artist Jhyve decided to tackle Remy Shand's "Take a Message," which was on the Juno-winning 2001 album The Way I Feel.
Scarborough's Jhyve, who was nominated for the 2018 Juno for R&B/soul recording of the year for his track "Human," put his own spin on the sultry Shand track, bringing new life to an old hit. Jhyve performed the cover at Rum Runners in London, Ont. (the 2019 Junos host city), and below he explains how he approached covering the song, and what stood out to him about "Take a Message" in the first place.
How did you approach covering this song?
I think when you're doing a song like "Take a Message," it's really important to capture the essence of what the song is. And at least to me it was [about] how poetic it was, how beautiful and unashamed the delivery is. I mean, it's all in this highest voice throughout the entire record. He's not trying to let up on you at all, it's just this beautiful thing. And you don't get a lot of that anymore in music these days. So I wanted to kind of bring that back and keep that flavour. That all-falsetto, beautiful, lyrical kind of music, but just put a modern twist on it. So that's what we did.
What kinds of modern twists did you add?
A lot of it just has to do with my own personality. I'm a guitarist, first and foremost, so having guitar in it was super important, just bringing that element of what I do to it. The right drums, the right feel, there's a lot of things you can do to make the record sound more current. So a lot of it really was in the beat, and just with the guitar, with the strumming and stuff like that.
Did anything about the original song especially stand out for you?
I think the thing that stood out the most when I was really rehearsing was just the fact that the story, the more you dive into the story of what it is, the more you're just like, who hurt you, man? What happened? It kind of feels like this story of love and loss and timing, and it's something that I think everybody can connect with. Just that idea of "take a message." And so to me, the more I was practising it, the more I started kind of getting to be at home with what he was trying to say, I feel like the easier it was to just dive into it and make it mine.
