Here's what you'll need:

  • Scrap paper to cover the surface you're working on
  • A large roll of cotton string, in colour of your choice
  • Scissors
  • A wooden dowel, around ½ metre in length
  • Masking tape
  • Small rectangular piece of cardboard
  • Paint, in colour of your choice
  • Flat foam paintbrush
  • Steel ring

Here's how to do it:

  1. Cut strands of string to the length of your choice, until you have around 50.
  2. One by one, loop a strand of string behind and over the dowel, before pulling the end through the hole to fasten it. Continue with each piece until all of your string is tied to the dowel. Comb strings to reduce any tangling.
  3. Near the bottom of your string, create a V shape using masking tape. Cut along the tape to get a clean V formation at the end of your string. Carefully remove tape.
  4. Tie knots with string at various lengths to create whatever pattern you like (we chose a V to mimic the bottom of our string). You can get creative here!
  5. Cut a long piece of string and begin wrapping it around your piece of cardboard lengthwise. Once it is completely wrapped around, cut off the end. Take the small leftover piece, tuck it underneath your section of wrapped string and tie a knot. Cut the opposite end of your string section and remove the cardboard. You should have the start of a tassel now. To finish it off, cut another long piece of string and wrap it around several times about an inch from the top of your tassel. When you're out of string, seal with a knot. Trim the ends of your tassel so that they're even. Tie tassel to the middle of your dowel.
  6. Use tape to form a V formation a few inches from the bottom of your string. Using your foam brush, paint the string from the tape guideline to the end. Carefully remove tape. Let dry.
  7. Cut 5 pieces of string approximately the length of your dowel. Tie the ends of your string to one side of your dowel, close to where your string section begins. Loop steel ring through the untied side of your string before tying that side to the dowel as well.
  8. Hang your new, beautiful wall hanging in the spot of your choice!
