Riding a bicycle is an excellent way to save money on transit and to get some cardio in, especially if you're rushing to get from point A to point B in a timely manner. But you'll need clothing and accessories that are comfortable, safe to ride in and that will help you stay dry when you sweat.

The good news is there are lots of options on the market that cater to casual riders, offering both function and style. Here, we've rounded up some of our favourites to wear when you're riding just about anywhere this summer.

If you're headed to an engagement that warrants a bit of dressing up (think: evening patio hangs, a coffee date with friends), consider a skort. This pull-on option from Penningtons features convenient side pockets for small items (keys, cards, etc.) and has built-in shorts that provide extra coverage for a comfortable ride.

You can never go wrong with a classic white sneaker. Retro styles in particular are having a fashion moment, like Reebok's Club C 85 Model, which is fitted with a lightweight impact-absorbing midsole and a leather upper to keep the whole foot supported mid- pedal-stroke.

The last thing anybody wants when pulling up to their destination is for their T-shirt to be soaked through with sweat. This option from Simons is made with a breathable stretch jersey that wicks away moisture and dries quickly.

Headed back to work? Skip the morning wardrobe change upon arrival by opting for smart pieces that do double duty. These tapered ankle pants from Uniqlo are made with a technical fabric that provides ample stretch and comfort on your morning commute, yet won't look out of place in the office.

If you need to bring a bag, something hands-free is your best bet. This oversized fanny pack by Canadian brand FWD features three roomy compartments with space to house essentials (keys, phone, wallet), a water bottle, sunscreen, a paperback… and possibly even more.

Yes, you can absolutely ride a bike while wearing a dress, it's just a matter of being safe about it. Instead of something with ruffles or layers that could potentially get caught in moving bike parts, go for a streamlined silhouette. This minimalist maxi-length T-shirt dress has side slits that can easily be tied up together to ensure minimal interference with wheels and pedals.

Gym shorts are a no-brainer when it comes to outdoor activities, but don't reach for any old shorts this season: the 5-inch inseam is officially the length du jour, as evidenced by celebs like Pharrell Williams, Milo Ventimiglia and Paul Mescal. Nike's Woven Shorts, which hit mid-thigh, are an ideal intro to this daring style, thanks to their roomy fit. Bonus: its mesh lining allows for maximum breathability on super hot days.

Those who wish to cruise in sandals should opt for styles that won't slip off. The back strap on these Cougar wedges keep feet secure and its chunky EVA sole allows for a grounded feel when coming to a complete stop.

The tiny bag craze is still going strong. To safely sport this trend while in the saddle look for models equipped with a cross-body strap. Our pick? The Mini Croc by Ai Toronto Seoul, which comes with not one, but two removable straps in different lengths.

Thigh Saver 6", $39, Knix

Chafing season is here, but don't let it ruin your Hot Vax Summer vibe. To put an end to any unwanted friction, look for a pair of silky smooth bike shorts, like Knix's Thigh Saver shorts: they're made with moisture-wicking fabric to sidestep irritation and are super lightweight so you won't feel weighed down. They're also seamless and ideal to layer underneath dresses and skirts.
