Roughriders reel in free agent Dorsey

The Toronto Argonauts gained an all-star receiver in Jeremaine Copeland on Wednesday but lost top kick-returner Dominique Dorsey, who signed a free-agent deal with Saskatchewan, where he began his CFL career.

Former Argos special-teams star broke into CFL with Saskatchewan in 2005

The loss of special-teams dynamo Dominique Dorsey is a big one for the Toronto Argonauts.

Dorsey, who signed a free-agent contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Wednesday, missed much of last season due to an NFL tryout and injury, but in 2008 was the CFL's top special teams player.   "You don't replace Dominique Dorsey," Argos head coach Jim Barker said. "You make your best offer, your best pitch and players choose where to go and that's the beauty of free agency.

"We're going to miss having him here."

The five-foot-seven, 173-pounder began his career in Regina in 2005 and spent two seasons with the Roughriders before signing with the Argos as a free agent.

In 54 regular-season games, Dorsey has returned 145 kickoffs for 3,239 yards and two touchdowns along with 212 punts for 2,301 yards and a pair of majors.

The 26-year-old has added 657 yards and four touchdowns along the ground and caught 26 passes for 381 yards.

It has been a busy week for Toronto general manager Adam Rita, who picked up all-star Jeremaine Copeland from Calgary on Wednesday for fellow receiver P.K. Sam, whom the Argonauts re-signed a day earlier.

Also Tuesday, free-agent cornerback Byron Parker signed on for a fourth stint in Toronto, while offensive lineman Cedric Gagne-Marcoux bolted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to join best friends Taylor Robertson and Dominic Picard with the Argos.
