Longtime CFL assistant Cortez joins Bills staff

The Buffalo Bills hired longtime CFL assistant coach George Cortez as their quarterbacks coach Monday.

The Buffalo Bills hired longtime CFL assistant coach George Cortez as their quarterbacks coach Monday.

Cortez most recently served as the Calgary Stampeders offensive co-ordinator.

He spent 11 of his 18 CFL seasons with the Stampeders, including seven as the team's offensive co-ordinator.

During his time with the Stampeders, Cortez was a member of four Grey Cup-winning teams and developed a reputation as being one of the CFL's brightest offensive minds.

Cortez also worked for the Montreal Alouettes/Concordes (four seasons), Ottawa Rough Riders (two years) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (one season).

Cortez also spent four years as the offensive co-ordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California-Berkley from 2002-05, helping develop first-round NFL picks Aaron Rodgers and Kyle Boller.

He also was the quarterbacks coach for two years at Southern Methodist University.
