Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and his wife, Kate, celebrated her first birthday Monday.

Charlotte's birthday on May 2 comes just a few days after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, on April 29.

Here's a look back at Charlotte's first year as a royal.

4th in line to the throne

Royal salutes

Charlotte's birth was marked with simultaneous royal gun salutes in London's Hyde Park and at the Tower of London — 41 and 62, respectively, honouring a tradition that celebrates the birth of every prince or princess, regardless of their place in the succession.

'Perfect' name

The princess's full name, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, is a nod to her late grandmother, Diana, and her great-grandmother Elizabeth. Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, welcomed the choice of names, saying they were "perfect."
