Star Wars day: May the fourth be with you

Star Wars fans rejoiced in their annual celebration of the movie franchise on the date that, said really quickly, sounds like the film's catchphrase: "May the force be with you."

Star Wars fans rejoiced in their annual celebration of the movie franchise on Monday. Star Wars Day is based on the date's phonetic similarity to the film's catchphrase: "May the force be with you."

Revellers wished "May the fourth be with you" to one another.

Toy-maker Lego celebrated by building the world's largest Millennium Falcon in Melbourne, Australia. 

Master builders Chris and Dan Steininger built the Star Wars spacecraft.

Some people dressed up to show off their fandom.

Some Canadian fans belonging to the official costuming organization dressed up as characters from the dark side and did some charity work.

Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, who stars on Orphan Black, joined the fun by dressing up as Darth Vader.

Even the Canadian government got in on the action. Parks Canada tweeted an inspiring quote from Yoda, a wise Jedi master.

The Star Wars theme song was scheduled to play at Parliament Hill's Peace Tower at noon ET.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair acknowledged on Twitter today that a image of him dressed as a Jedi knight was circulating among supporters. He expressed his desire to change the colour of his lightsaber, and Nova Scotia MLA Dave Wilson was only too happy to oblige. 

For the first time in years, fans have a new Star Wars movie to look forward to this May 4. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens will be in theatres this December.
