This past long weekend was a hot one and Windsorites flooded the city's pools to stay cool.

It was "extremely busy" at Adventure Bay Family Water Park, said Jennifer Knights, manager of aquatic services with the city, with "over 700 guests plus members" showing up on Saturday and Sunday.

Knights said people nowadays prefer to be indoors when it gets too hot outside.

"I think with concerns about sun safety and such, I think a lot of times, especially people with young children, would prefer a cooler indoor environment," she said.

The long weekend had an average high in the low thirties — with the temperature hitting a maximum of 34 C on Canada Day.

A heat warning continues to be in place for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. Environment Canada says it won't cool down until Friday.

In response to the heat, the City of Windsor announced it will be adding additional swim hours for its outdoor pools last Friday and reminds people of the eight spray pads available daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. across the city.

"Over the weekend, we added extra swims at the outdoor pools for folks, and we're continuing to do that through this week, just to make sure we have options both inside, outside," said Knights.

She said the pools are now running on their summer schedules as well.
