Strong winds cause flooding in Chatham-Kent
Water and wind could cause damage to the shore, says LTVCA
Flood waters are creeping up on Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent, according to the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority.
Waves from Lake Erie are being driven by strong southerly winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h and spray is starting cause water to surround some homes.
"Strong winds ... create large waves that hit the shoreline protection," explained water management supervisor Jason Wintermute. "It sprays water up onto the land and as time goes on more and more water accumulates and it causes flooding."
Wintermute said city staff are no longer monitoring the area as waves have subsided.
Water levels above the shoreline are also receding.
The winds could cause shoreline erosion and residents who live near the lake should be prepared, said the LTVCA in a flood watch warning issued Thursday afternoon.
People are warned the shore may be slippery and debris could make the lake hazardous to boaters.
