A section of Highway 401 near Chatham-Kent has now reopened, police say, after a crash involving nine cars briefly closed the road Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, an OPP spokesperson said five people were taken to hospital for injuries not considered to be life-threatening. Across the nine cars there were 12 total occupants.

"A small snow squall affected the area and contributed to poor road and weather conditions in an isolated section of the 401 and surrounding area," said Const. Brett Phair of Elgin OPP.

Drivers are asked to be mindful of changing conditions and adjust their driving accordingly, especially this time of year.

"It is very fortunate that no one was seriously injured in this event," Phair said.
