Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man was seriously injured when he was arrested by Durham police in Pickering on the weekend.

In a news release on Monday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the man, 29, was taken to hospital after the arrest.

According to the SIU, the incident began when the man entered a police station in Pickering at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The SIU said he was armed with an air pistol and discharged projectiles.

The SIU said two officers tried to arrest him using stun guns, but they were not able to subdue him.

Police continued to try to bring him into custody, the SIU said. The man barricaded himself in a public washroom in the station and shot his air pistol several times, the SIU added.

"The man was eventually arrested and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury," the SIU said in the release.

The Durham Regional Police Service said two officers suffered minor injuries during the arrest.

The SIU said it has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at someone.
