Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man who entered a Pickering police station allegedly armed with a firearm was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

On Saturday, Durham Regional Police said a person had been arrested after allegedly bringing a firearm into the station. Sunday afternoon, the force said the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now investigating the incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at someone.

Police said a male entered the west division Saturday afternoon with what officers believe is a pellet gun.

"Officers believe at this time the firearm is a pellet gun, however it is required to be sent for testing to confirm," police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Investigators say an interaction took place between the male and officers at the front desk, leading them to place him in custody.

He was taken to hospital, but police don't provide details about the nature of his injuries.

Two officers have minor injuries as a result of the interaction, police said.

"The investigation remains active, further information will be released once we are able to do so," police said Saturday.

With the SIU now involved, Durham police says it cannot provide any further details.
