Man dead, woman in critical condition after overnight fire in Scarborough
Emergency responders called to home just after 2:30 a.m.
One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a house fire in Scarborough.
Emergency responders were called to a home at Birchmount Road and Highway 401 just after 2:30 a.m. and met with heavy smoke and flames.
An elderly man was pulled from the blaze without vital signs and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Platoon Chief John Brunton with Toronto Fire Services said.
An elderly woman was also taken to hospital. A third person had minor injuries and four others made it out of the home on their own.
The investigation has been turned over to the Ontario Fire Marshal's office and the Toronto Fire investigation team.
It's too soon to say what caused the fire, but Brunton cautioned to take extra care over the holidays when there may be more candles and cooking.
"Christmas unfortunately, which is a wonderful time of year and a happy time of year, unfortunately it ends up being a tragic time of year for a number of reasons," he said.
