Nia Vardalos named cultural ambassador of the Greek community of Toronto
Greek-Canadian actress was to be honoured at a ceremony Monday
Nia Vardalos, the actress and screenwriter behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding, can now add a new line to her resume: cultural ambassador.
The Greek-Canadian actress was to be honoured at a ceremony Monday naming her cultural ambassador of the Greek Community of Toronto for 2014-2015.
Vardalos, who is in Toronto performing in Theatre 20's production of Stephen Sondheim's Company, rose to fame in 2002 with her role as a Greek-American travel agent struggling to get her zany family to accept her non-Greek fiance.
The Winnipeg-born star was to be presented with a plaque acknowledging her commitment to the Greek community at 6 p.m. at the Polymenakion Hellenic Cultural Centre, followed by a youth dance performance and autograph signing.
The Greek Community of Toronto represents over 150,000 Canadians of Hellenic descent in the Greater Toronto Area and serves to promote Greek culture and heritage.
Vardalos recently announced she's working on a My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel, which will reunite original stars including John Corbett, who played her husband-to-be.
