A Richmond Hill man has been charged with second-degree murder, York Regional Police say, after the death of his seven-week-old child.

In a news release Thursday, investigators said that back in January, York Children's Aid Society flagged the case of a child who had been taken to hospital in Toronto.

"The seven-week-old infant had significant injuries which could not be explained by their parents," the news release reads. The baby then died on Jan. 18, three days after hospitalization.

The infant's father, a 30-year-old Richmond Hill man, was subsequently charged with second-degree murder on Oct. 23.

Police did not provide any other information about what occurred. The man is expected to appear in court later this month.
