Wapekeka works to provide education to students, following school fire

Teachers in Wapekeka First Nation, about 600 km. north of Thunder Bay, Ont. are working to get educational resources ready for students, after the community's elementary school was destroyed by a fire on May 13..

Georgina Winter, a teacher at Reverend Eleazar Winter Memorial School, said it was devastating to watch her classroom go up in flames, but she said now, her focus is on her students.

Winter said children are being home-schooled until partitions are set up in a building in the community.

Teachers will then rotate classes during the day, she said.

"It's going to be crowded and challenging," she said.

Winters said teachers are spending hours each day at a single photocopier trying to get lessons together for the students.

"We're just going to try to do the best we can under the circumstances. We just have to do the best we can with the kids," said Winter.
