Thunder Bay Police have released the name of the man they say is the city's 10th homicide victim in 2014.

He is 51-year-old Rene Sortolovo.

Sortolovo "was originally from El Salvador. He was a resident of Thunder Bay dating back to the 1990's. At the time of his death, he lived alone in his North Marks Street residence," police said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

Rene Sortolovo's body was discovered in his North Marks Street residence on Sunday, Oct. 19. His death was deemed a homicide on Oct. 20, following a post mortem examination. (CBC)

Angel Souliere lives on North Marks Street.

Neighbour feels 'a little more unsafe'

She said she knows most of her neighbours, and usually feels fairly safe.

Souliere said news of the homicide is unnerving, but she's not overly scared.

"I feel a little more unsafe, yes, especially because I have small children but not anymore than I would have been with a murder at Chapples or a murder you know, so I just keep my doors locked real good, and I have my dogs," she said.

'Takes a toll' on police

Thunder Bay's chief of police says his officers are feeling drained by the city's murder rate.

J.P. Levesque says the service has been extremely busy, dealing with 10 homicides in less than a year.

"It takes a toll on our resources. It takes a toll on the individuals. Our criminal investigation branch is not that big, and to have 10 homicides in the course of 10 months is a lot to put on them. So, it concerns us. We keep an eye on our people and make sure everybody is healthy," said Levesque.

Post mortem reveals foul play

Earlier on Tuesday police said they were considering Sunday's sudden death a homicide.

Police and EMS were called to a residence on North Marks St. on Oct. 19 to check the welfare of a male.

Upon arrival, they found him dead.

A post mortem conducted Monday revealed the man had died as a result of foul play.
